Locums switch on short-notice availability when they are free. Search by profession, skills, distance and rate, and send a request to up to three people.
For practices
Find, book and pay locums in one place
LocumNow is for independent practices: GPs, dentists, physios, pharmacies, optometrists, clinics and hospitals. Use it when someone calls in sick, and for the cover you can plan weeks ahead.
Finding cover
Someone who can be there today, or every Wednesday.
You only see locums who have the skills the shift needs and whose documents we have checked.
Your Cover Circle
Add the locums you already use and agree a rate with each of them once. New shifts are offered to them first, and you can rebook them in a couple of clicks.
Planned cover
Post a shift, or the same session for eight weeks in one go. Locums who match apply, and you choose who to confirm. Each date is accepted separately.
Checked locums
We check the documents so you don't have to keep them.
You see what we checked, against which register and on what date. You never have to store copies of other people's certificates.
What we check
- Identity, against Home Affairs records
- Council registration on the HPCSA, SANC or SAPC register
- Professional indemnity cover and its expiry date
- Qualifications, and evidence for skills like emergency centre work or sedation
- For receptionists: identity and a reference from a previous employer
When documents expire
We track expiry dates. If a locum's registration or indemnity lapses, they can't be booked until a new one has been checked.
Locums can also add up to three documents of their own, such as a reference letter. Those are clearly marked as not checked by us.
On the day
Everyone knows what to expect.
Write your handover pack once, and every locum you book gets it.
Handover pack
Arrival, parking, your clinical system, emergency equipment and who to call. Each time you change it, booked locums are asked to read it again, and you can see who has.
Door codes on the day
Mark codes and Wi-Fi passwords as “on the day”. The locum only sees them between checking in and checking out.
GPS check-in
The locum checks in and out on their phone inside a small area around your practice. You can see who is on site right now.
Hours and invoices
The paperwork is done for you.
When you approve a locum's hours, their invoice is written automatically.
Approving hours
Compare the booked hours, the GPS times and the hours the locum sends. If something is wrong, query it with a note and the locum corrects it.
Paying locums
One invoice per shift, due when you say. If you owe one locum for several shifts, you see the total on one line and can mark them all paid at once.
Ratings
After each shift you rate the locum and they rate your practice. Neither of you sees the other's rating until you have both rated.
What you need to register
Your practice's details and address, a phone number we can call, and one or two documents that show the practice is registered, such as your BHF practice number letter. We check them before your first booking.
